Parent/Athlete Code of Conduct for USA Swimming Clubs
Introduction: This Parent/Athlete Code of Conduct has been established to promote a positive and respectful environment within USA Swimming clubs. It outlines the expected behavior and responsibilities of parents and athletes involved in the club. By adhering to this code, we aim to ensure the well-being and development of all participants and uphold the values of sportsmanship, teamwork, and fair play.
For Parents:
- Supportive Behavior: a. Encourage and support your child's participation in swimming, emphasizing enjoyment and personal growth over winning. b. Respect the decisions and authority of coaches, officials, and club administrators. c. Refrain from engaging in any disruptive or disrespectful behavior, including using abusive language, derogatory remarks, or aggressive gestures towards athletes, coaches, officials, or other parents.
- Positive Communication: a. Communicate with coaches in a respectful and constructive manner, addressing concerns or issues privately and at appropriate times. b. Promote open and honest communication between parents, coaches, and club administrators, focusing on the best interests of the athletes and the club. c. Avoid gossiping or spreading rumors that may negatively impact the club or individuals involved.
- Respect for Boundaries: a. Respect the personal space, privacy, and belongings of other athletes, parents, coaches, and club staff. b. Refrain from interfering with the coaching process during practices or competitions, allowing coaches to perform their duties without unnecessary distractions. c. Avoid excessive involvement or interference in the athletic performance or training of your child or other athletes, understanding that the coaching staff is responsible for their development.
- Adherence to Policies: a. Familiarize yourself with and adhere to all policies, rules, and regulations set forth by the USA Swimming, the club, and any competition venues. b. Ensure that your child arrives on time for practices, meetings, and competitions, and notify the appropriate individuals in case of absence or delay.
For Athletes:
- Sportsmanship and Respect: a. Show respect towards coaches, officials, fellow athletes, and other individuals associated with the club, regardless of differences in skill level or background. b. Display good sportsmanship at all times, win or lose, by congratulating opponents, shaking hands, and refraining from engaging in unsportsmanlike behavior. c. Accept decisions made by coaches and officials without arguing, questioning, or challenging their authority.
- Commitment and Effort: a. Attend practices, meetings, and competitions regularly and punctually, notifying coaches in case of absence or delay. b. Give your best effort during training sessions and competitions, demonstrating dedication, focus, and a positive attitude. c. Follow training instructions provided by coaches, seeking clarification when needed, and actively participating in team activities.
- Personal Conduct: a. Refrain from using foul language, engaging in bullying, harassment, or any form of discrimination. b. Respect the facilities, equipment, and property of the club and competition venues, avoiding any intentional damage or theft. c. Comply with the anti-doping policies and regulations set forth by USA Swimming and other relevant authorities.
- Supportive Role: a. Encourage and support your teammates, promoting a cooperative and friendly team atmosphere. b. Offer assistance to fellow athletes, particularly new or younger members of the club, to help create a welcoming environment. c. Seek guidance and support from coaches when facing challenges or experiencing any concerns related to training or competition.
Consequences: Violation of this Parent/Athlete Code of Conduct may result in disciplinary actions, including but not limited to warnings, suspension, or termination of club membership. The severity of the consequences will depend on the nature and frequency of the violation, as determined by the club and its officials.
By agreeing to this code, parents and athletes acknowledge their commitment to uphold these standards of behavior and contribute positively to the overall experience and growth of the club and its members.
